Le Chocolat Chaud- or Hot chocolate. Fresh. Delicious

I’m afraid I blog with bad news- times is well ‘ard in the Paris camp. I’m very poor, so expect recipes with a focus on the cheap rather than chic. So, I thought I’d post my recipe for fresh hot chocolate. Screw your January diets, there really is no better comfort than freshly made hot chocolate and a good film (I watched Powell and Pressburger’s The Red Shoes) from the turnover to Spring from the Winter.

Le Chocolat Chaud

Foreplay time (or preparation and cooking): 10 minutes

Ingredients (per person. This makes about a pint’s worth)

400ml milk (you can use semi-skimmed, but I normally splash out and buy full fat. If you need hot chocolate, go crazy and buy full fat. You need it. If you have fully skimmed I suggest you go in a dark room, flagellate yourself and think on your life choices)

50g dark chocolate (the darkest you can get, and I always buy the cheapest. It’s going to be melted, just the highest percentage)

1-tablespoon sugar

Crockery

1 Saucepan

1 super kitsch mug

  1. Put the milk, chocolate and sugar in the saucepan and slowly heat over a moderate heat, stir the whole time with a wooden spoon (a wooden spoon because metal will impair the flavour, and the chocolate will stick to it) Do NOT let the milk boil, it will ruin the flavour.
  2. Stir until the dark chocolate has broken down completely and the milk is hot enough for you to taste but not scald your tongue. Pour into your super kitsch mug and serve.

Add more sugar to taste, if you serve please, and enjoy the thick sweetness.  Fresh hot chocolate really does beat the powdered nonsense, and the stirring is relaxing and distracting. Enjoy making this, it’s very easy and would be surprised by how delicious it comes out. Have a lovely Sunday, y’all.

Ps: This blogpost is dedicated to the lovely Immy, who was as sweet and kind about this blog as she herself is, and so this delicious hot chocolate is dedicated to her.

  1. I love the pint per person hot chocolate philosophy. Very you.

    1. Lack of scales and money is resulting in this fresh approach to weighing things. Plus I have the innate ability to measure 468ml of any liquid.
